Computer Systems Engineers and Architects
Computer Systems Engineers and Architects design the overall “blueprints” for complex computer systems so that hardware, software, and networks all work together smoothly and securely. They study what an organization needs, choose and configure servers and other components, plan system architectures, and run models or simulations to predict how systems will perform under heavy use. They also lead projects, set technical standards, check for security and reliability problems, and guide teams of developers and technicians as they install, test, upgrade, and maintain these systems.

Things to consider
Security Clearance Opportunities
Many high-paying positions with government agencies and defense contractors require security clearances, which can significantly increase earning potential and job security.
Geographic Concentration
The highest-paying opportunities are typically concentrated in major tech hubs like Silicon Valley, Seattle, and Austin, which also have higher living costs.
Key responsibilities
Investigate system component suitability for specified purposes, and make recommendations regarding component use.
Develop efficient and effective system controllers.
Identify system data, hardware, or software components required to meet user needs.
Verify stability, interoperability, portability, security, or scalability of system architecture.
Develop application-specific software.
